My Beach Hair Essentials

August 14, 2017

Nothing makes your hair wig out more than humidity and that ocean breeze. We’ve spent a lot of time at the beach this summer and I’ve learned a few things and discovered some favorite products for controlling hair by the sea. I hid under a hat for the first part of summer because my hair mop was better off in a bun, but my recent routine has been working wonders. So here it goes…

First and foremost, embracing the elements is key to not fighting what your hair probably isn’t going to do at all. Basically, just roll with whatever your hair is doing in response to climate, chlorine, water etc. Instead, work with the direction your hair is going. For me that means controlling frizz and enhancing any waves with the right products.
I start with Kristin Ess Signature Shampoo and Conditioner, which controls my frizz a little from the start and repairs damaged hair. Plus it smells amazing. While my hair is wet I coat it well with Ouai hair oil, especially the areas I know get frizzy—usually 2-3 pumps. Then I spritz all over with Sacha Juan Ocean Mist, by far my favorite wave spray of any sort because it never leaves my hair feeling stiff or crunchy. I’ve been using it for a few years now and haven’t found anything I like better. I always throw it in my beach bag to use after going in the ocean or pool too and it gives me that perfect undone summer wave. Once my hair is dry I’ll add some styling cream like Bumble and Bumble Brilliantine, which gives it a little weight and control for a more piecy look. For extra humid or frizzy days I’ll take a dime size smudge of Ouai Matte Pomade and scrunch, separate and smooth certain pieces. Lastly I always carry some kind of styling creme with me to control my hair throughout the day and keep the frizz at bay. And if all else fails, jump in the ocean. Dress by Zimmermann // photography by Jacqueline Pilar.
